A word about the print from Jason Paul Smith

Clinton sits on the edge of the Mixed Prairie,  tall grass to the east, short grass to the west. These prairie systems stretch like veins from Canada all the way down to South Texas.

I’ve talked before about the “survival energy” in Western Oklahoma, something I haven’t felt anywhere else I’ve lived. Life here feels like conquering the land by dancing with it. Like surfing. Like climbing. You don’t beat the ecosystem; you build a relationship with it.

That creates a unique community. At first it can feel guarded,  Who are you? Where’d you come from?,  but over time, if you stay, if you give something of yourself to the place, the walls soften. An olive branch appears. Respect here is earned through endurance.

The people willing to take on this land have often been called cowboys. But as someone who stepped into this world from the outside, it’s always felt kind of punk to me. Not punk in the fashion sense,  punk in the survival sense. DIY. Resourceful. Uncompromising. Building something meaningful in a place most people overlook.

And punk means nothing without community. It’s people leaning on each other so they can live honestly and creatively without being flattened by the world around them.

Growing up, weekends meant trips to the Wichita Wildlife Refuge,  treasure hunting for Jesse James gold, swimming rivers, climbing, camping, searching for locations from Bill Wallace books, and always stopping to watch the prairie dogs. Tiny animals with loud mouths and zero fear, living out in the open beside buffalo and elk, barking at us when we got too close.

Prairie dogs survive brutal weather, isolation, predators, and wide-open land with nowhere to hide. There’s something familiar about that.

In Western Oklahoma, sometimes just staying rooted, choosing to create something here instead of leaving, can feel punk.

This print is about the people who stay. The ones who build, make art, raise families, start bands, open shops, and create culture in places that the rest of the world drives past without noticing.

Survival as rebellion.

I made this design one night with my daughter, Opal. It was a true 50/50 collaboration, and she got the very first print.
