La India María was always somewhere in the house growing up. Maybe in the background while my mom cooked or cleaned. I remember Nana (my grandma) and my tias laughter while watching this lady on the screen. You didn’t have to be watching the movie to recognize her voice, the way she talked, the way she carried herself. She was funny, sure, but looking back there was always something real in it too. She represented people who didn’t always get taken seriously, but still moved through the world with pride.

For a lot of Hispanic households, she was just part of life. Someone your parents knew, someone your grandparents laughed at, someone you grew up seeing without really thinking about it. But looking back, she carried a lot of truth about our people humble, stubborn, sharp, and always finding a way to laugh even when things weren’t easy.
